Are some video games actually bad for kids?

Some Video Games May Be Bad for Kids

Today, the vast majority of kids play video games. They’ve become an important pillar of youth culture, combining the benefits of socializing with the thrill of competition. However, parents need to exercise caution when it comes to the kind of games they allow their children to play, how much time their children spend playing, and the practices the game uses to make money.

Games Can Desensitize Children to Violence

This is many parent’s chief concern when they see their children playing violent video games. It’s a totally valid concern, as playing some excessively violent games like Grand Theft Auto and Mortal Kombat have shown increased aggression levels in young boys.

Two studies published by the American Psychological Association (APA) found links between video games and aggressive thought patterns and found video games to be more likely to produce these thoughts than television or movies.

The active nature of video games makes them more harmful than witnessing violence on TV and in movies, which has a noted link to an increase in violent and aggressive thoughts.

Video Game Addiction

Video games are designed to be addictive, and this poses issues for developing minds. While the APA is hesitant to consider a true addiction, there’s no doubt that it’s nearly impossible to get some children to put down their controller. On the other hand, the World Health Organization does classify video game addiction as a real disorder.

A video game obsession can impede a child’s development. Instead of doing school work and socializing, some children lock themselves in their rooms gaming for hours a day. Lacking academic and social skills could push a child further into their game worlds.

Another negative aspect of excessive video gaming is its impact on a child’s health. When a child plays video games instead of exercising, they risk weight gain. Additionally, a child may also skip meals or miss out on sleep to get more time to game.

Predatory Transactions

In the past, getting a video game was a one-time cost. However, today’s most popular games are free to play but feature in-game transactions that afford players new cosmetic items and additional loot. These “loot boxes” are usually randomized, meaning the player never knows what they’ll get.

This causes some children to spend thousands of dollars of their parent’s money in pursuit of their desired in-game reward. It’s a behavior that’s similar to gambling addiction in adults.

Some countries are taking steps to outlaw loot boxes in video games, directly citing their manipulation of children as their reason for doing so. Parents need to teach their kids to avoid these mechanics.
