Is Gaming Banned in China?
The news is making much of a gaming ban in China. However, the ban in the news is an attempt to keep children from playing games during school. The current ban keeps those under 18 from playing on weekdays and limits weekend game time to 3 hours.
There was a ban on the production and import of games and consoles from 2000-2015. There were a few consoles on the market, such as the rebranded Nintendo consoles sold as iQue in the country.
During this time, pirated games became very common. Since gamers were used to paying nothing for games, the major model moved to online games with microtransactions.
Playing games in internet cafes became very common during this time. MMOs were the most common games. Some Western examples like World of Warcraft were very popular with their subscription model. There were many clones of this type of game with low upfront costs to attract a larger player base in the country.
Worries over the addicting quality of games has been the driving force behind video game bans in China. Even during the console ban, arcades were allowed to operate so long as they took steps to limit playtime for children.
The ban on video game hardware was partly lifted in 2014 and fully eliminated in 2015. There was also a pause in game licenses after a change to the government body that issued them. There were also changes made that made it more difficult for licenses to be obtained for games in the country.
Currently, worries about myopia in schoolchildren is driving another ban on games in the country. Playing games on small screens like phones is blamed for vision problems. Many mobile games in the country now require an ID to play. This is to track how much time younger players are spending and allows the company to restrict their playtime.
The approval process needed to sell games in China means that many games require changes for the market or are banned outright. While some players make use of services like Steam with foreign servers to access banned games, many gamers are cut off from popular franchises.
The requirement to track playtime for younger players has made it difficult for companies that want an international release. Tracking minors can bring up privacy concerns or is even on legally shaky grounds in other countries. This means game companies may decide to create a special Chinese release or skip the country entirely.
