Super Mario: A Franchise with Virtually Endless Content
Nintendo’s smash hit franchise, Super Mario Bros. (and its various spin offs), has been wildly successful since its inception. Mario first made his appearance onto the scene with the hit game Donkey Kong, originally released way back in 1981. The first game solely dedicated to the tales of everyone’s favorite plumber was released in 1985.
The number of games that Mario has appeared in borders on the obscene. Mario appears in an absurd number of games (seriously,the list is quite long). Mario and his brother, Luigi, have been forceful influences in gaming for their entire tenure as Nintendo’s de facto mascots.
Gameplay Styles of Mario Games
Most of the games dedicated to Mario are of the platforming and puzzle solving variety. Some of his titles, like Mario Sunshine, have a focus on cleaning up a mess, while others, like the older titles such as Super Mario World, focus on saving Princess Peach. Mario games are typically rated favorably by reviewers as Nintendo has discovered a bit of a winning formula. Between the unique and vibrant design, the consistently fun and innovating gameplay mechanics, and the hysterically adorable sound effects, it is easy to understand why Mario is one of the most recognizable characters or symbols in the world.
Amount of Content
The sheer amount of Mario related content is staggering. Starting in 1985 with Super Mario Bros., Nintendo has consistently released hit after hit starring their prized plumber. Just in the “Super” series alone there are 23 individual titles. These titles are spread out from Nintendo’s various consoles, so regardless of which console or gaming system you own, you can find a corresponding Mario title.
Reviews
Mario games have been consistently highly reviewed for years, and their influence on video games, both as a cultural phenomenon and purely as an artistic inspiration, cannot be understated. This dynamic duo of plumbers has left their mark on virtually every corner of the virtual entertainment world.
The Mario franchise has also aged beautifully. Each game’s soundtrack still stands out as among the most full and descriptive. The games launch into songs that convey the general feeling of each level perfectly, and the main theme is one that many people know by heart.
Conclusion
If I were to rate the entire franchise, I’d give it just shy of a perfect score only because I’m not sure what a perfect game or franchise would even look like. There is nearly endless content for Mario lovers though, and you’re sure to find hidden gems anywhere you look in Nintendo’s library of games.
