SecondLife.com a Massive, Immersive Simulated Universe for Living Your Best Life
Imagine being able to escape your normal, mundane life for several hours a day to enter an entirely different universe where you could design who you are and what you are from the ground up. That includes your physical appearance.
You could make yourself into a gorgeous, muscle-bound man with movie-star good looks, a woman of goddess-like beauty – or you could choose to be a disembodied flying eyeball – or a chummy bear-like creature with golden fur.
That’s what’s possible when you join SecondLife.com. It’s a massive virtual reality community built and launched by Linden Labs in 2003. Since then, Second Life has been experienced by uncounted millions of people. Today, it enjoys about 40,000 concurrent users on any given day.
Ten years after its launch, Second Life had garnered a million users, although membership has stalled somewhat since 2017. Today this digital world has stabilized at about 800,000 to 900,000 members.
The simulated universe of Second Life has been described as “massive.” It’s a fully immersive explorable world with endless venues to experience and enjoy. For example, you can check out restaurants and bars or go to a theater to watch a live performance play.
If you want to further your education, you can sign up to take classes at a virtual university. The West Virginia University Department of Education uses Second Life to offer classes in education that earns real college credits.
Some nations have even opened embassies inside Second Life. The first to do so was the Maldives. It operates an embassy “building” on “Diplomacy Island.” Visitors can engage in face-to-face conversations with computer-generated Maldives government officials who will help you with things like visa applications, trade relations and other issues of state and commerce.
Can you attend the church of your choice in Second Life? Yes, you can. There are Christian churches of many denominations, Islamic mosques, Jewish synagogues -– and organizations for atheists, freethinkers, humanists and agnostics.
As you might expect, SecondLife gaming offers an array of stimulating activities for members. The Playdium Game Room is new and popular as is the more established Southern Hospitality Game Park where all games are free. For example, in the Playdium, you will find “general games,” such as bowling, pool, bingo, beer pong and much more.
The array and types of games are extremely numerous, from roleplaying life simulation games to more simple fare, such as pen and paper games.
Second Life has established its own economy with a legal tender currency called the Linden Dollar which is exchangeable for real-world dollars. You can even get a job or offer a service to clients via the SecondLife environment to earn a full-time or part-time income.
Some people do this by buying and selling virtual real estate while others create and sell content, including clothing and gadgets.
In short, Second Life is a vast universe unto itself where just about anything you can imagine being or doing is possible.
